Start with the entry
A credit-file complaint has two layers: the underlying account dispute and the accuracy of what is being reported.
Quote the entry exactly: lender/provider, account, balance, status, default date or payment history. Then show what the underlying records say. A credit reference agency (CRA) may need to refer supplied account data back to the organisation that reported it, so it can be sensible to raise the issue with both where appropriate.
- Save a current copy or screenshot of the credit entry before it changes.
- Separate disputes about the debt itself from disputes about how it is recorded.
- If you challenge a default, identify whether the dispute is about the existence of the default, its date, balance, status or surrounding reporting.
- Ask for the corrected position to be sent to the CRAs, not just amended internally.

Version 2: default date, balance or status dispute

How to edit it: replace everything in square brackets with your own details. If a bracketed paragraph does not apply, delete it before sending.
Editable template
Version 3: lender or CRA says the entry has been “verified”
Use this when your first dispute has been rejected with a generic statement that the information was checked or verified.
How to edit it: replace everything in square brackets with your own details. If a bracketed paragraph does not apply, delete it before sending.
Important distinction
A service or debt dispute is not automatically a data-accuracy dispute.
The ICO does not decide whether you legally owe a disputed bill. If the underlying liability is unresolved, you may need to resolve that service, contract or financial dispute first or in parallel. The credit-file template should identify what part of the reported data is itself inaccurate or misleading.
