Pharmacy and optician complaints

Complaint routes for NHS and private pharmacy, prescription, dispensing, sight-test and optical-service problems, including ICB, PHSO and professional regulators.

A pharmacy or optical complaint can involve an NHS service, a private retail transaction, professional practice, a product, or several routes at once. Identify which part failed before choosing the complaint body.

The NHS complaints framework can apply to commissioned NHS services. Ordinary retail or private-service disputes may engage consumer law instead. Serious professional concerns belong with the appropriate regulator.

Key points

  • For an NHS primary-care complaint, choose the provider or local ICB for the same complaint.
  • The General Pharmaceutical Council regulates pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and registered pharmacies in Great Britain.
  • The General Optical Council regulates optometrists, dispensing opticians and registered optical businesses.
  • PHSO covers eligible unresolved NHS complaints in England, not ordinary private retail disputes.
  • Medication errors or sudden sight risks may require urgent clinical action before a complaint.
